Bible commentary by Dr J Vernon McGee. Genesis 1:26-31. The creation of man. Man created man in His own image. Man was created out of 'nothing', same word as first 'created' in Genesis. Specific details of creation omitted. Focus paid to man, not universe. Dominion (and authority) given to man. Man exists as a trinity, in the image of God. Man is a free moral agent and unique to mankind. Additional details given to creation of man, but not universe. Focus given to man. Evolution does not explain something from nothing. Commands given to man, fruitful, multiply, subdue, dominion. God introduces man to sex. Direct creation, indirect creation, natural generation. 'Replenish' indicative of prior undisclosed inhabitants. 'Subdue' the foundation of scientific study. Man was to rule the earth. Adam had dominion as Christ had dominion over the earth. Man was a vegetarian at first. No attempt to prove the existence of God. Genesis denies polytheism, the eternity of matter, pantheism, fatalism.
